Writer: Ravi Teja KandibandaRavi Teja Kandibanda

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an archipelago nestled in the Bay of Bengal, have a rich and intriguing history that spans thousands of years. From indigenous tribes and colonial conquests to their strategic role in modern India, these islands have witnessed a blend of cultures, conflicts, and resilience.

Ancient Inhabitants: The Indigenous Tribes

The earliest known settlers of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were indigenous tribes who arrived nearly 26,000 years ago. The Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarwa, and Sentinalese have lived in isolation for centuries, preserving their unique languages and traditions

Early References and Trade Connections

Historical records suggest that the islands were known to ancient civilizations, including the Mauryan Empire (322–185 BCE) and later, the Chola Dynasty (c. 1014 CE). The islands were a part of maritime trade routes used by merchants from India, Arabia, and Southeast Asia. Chinese traveler I-Tsing (7th century CE) also mentioned these islands in his accounts.

Colonial Era

The colonial history of Andaman and Nicobar began in the 18th century, with European powers showing interest in the islands.

The infamous Cellular Jail, also called "Kala Pani" (Black Waters), was constructed in 1906 to imprison freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and many others. It became a symbol of India's struggle for independence.

Post-Independence and Modern Era

After India gained independence in 1947, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands became a Union Territory in 1956. The strategic importance of the islands led to the establishment of a strong naval and air force presence. Today, Port Blair serves as the administrative capital, and tourism has flourished due to the islands’ pristine beaches, rich marine biodiversity, and historical significance.

Preserving History and Culture

While modernization has transformed many parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, efforts are being made to preserve the indigenous communities and historical landmarks like the Cellular Jail, Ross Island, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island.
